 Satellite Data

A large part of my work for EuroClim is the processing satellite data to derive sea ice parameters. The principal source of data is the various passive microwave sensors that have been available on satellite since the early 1970's but I also work on data from new active microwave staellites from the 1990's.

The 3 types of product produced for EuroClim are listed below along with a few example quicklooks. The actual datafiles are quite large so I have not included them here. For access to these see the EuroClim official pages.

Sea Ice Concentration (SIC)

I derive the SIC values using the Bootstrap algorithm developed by Joey Comiso of NASA GSFC.

Monthly

Our monthly products are based on processing of daily scenes.

Quarterly

In EuroClim the quarter years are DJF, MAM, JJA and SON.

Annual

The annual product allowed me to generate some extra useful values like days of ice cover and date of ice break-up.

Sea Ice Multi-Year (SIM)

This is a derivative of the Bootstrap algortihm used for SIC.

Sea Ice Type/(Thickness) (SIT)
